Dear Parents,
You may have heard or read that on Tuesday, September 8, President Obama will deliver a national address to the students of America. During this special address, President Obama will speak directly to the nation’s children and youth about persisting and succeeding in school. He will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning.
The school’s plan is to record the broadcast, which will be shown live on the White House Web site (http://www.whitehouse.gov/live/) and on C-SPAN at 12:00 p.m., ET. We understand that the president will be speaking for 15-20 minutes. The history/social studies teachers in Kindergarten through 8th grade will have a class discussion with the students about the topics that the president brings up some time during the week next week. In grades Kindergarten through 8th, students will be shown the recording of either all or parts of the speech (attention spans vary between those grade levels) during the week next week.
Please understand that Kindergarten through 8th will have a class discussion and may see the entire broadcast or a portion of the broadcast next week, not necessarily on Tuesday though. We understand that this broadcast was meant for the school aged children, which is why we will be sharing it with Kindergarten through 8th only.
We believe that the message to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for learning is a good message that can be shared by all, regardless of their political party. We have had a few inquiries, so if, for some reason, you are opposed to your child listening to such a message, or listening to a brief class discussion about the message, then you must send a letter to your child’s homeroom teacher or directly to the office on Tuesday morning and we will respect your wishes.
Sincerely,
Mary Kevin Cahill
Principal
